child safety standards

Parallax is an adults-only relationship insight app for couples. This page sets out the standards we apply to combat child sexual abuse and exploitation (CSAE), how to report a concern, and who at Belvantis is responsible for child safety on this product. It is published in compliance with Google Play's Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation policy and applicable laws including the U.S. PROTECT Act and 18 U.S.C. § 2258A.

1. Who Parallax is for

Parallax is restricted to adults aged 18 and older in a committed romantic relationship. This is stated in our Terms of Service §2 and is enforced through the following design choices:

  • Sign-in requires a verified email or OAuth identity (Apple Sign In or Google Sign In) — both of which apply Apple's and Google's own age-of-account verification.
  • The onboarding flow communicates that Parallax is for adults in a committed relationship.
  • If we become aware that an account is held by a person under 18, we delete the account and notify the paired partner that the dyad has been dissolved (Privacy Policy §Children).

2. Why the Parallax architecture makes CSAE materially difficult

Parallax is not a social network, a dating app, or a content-sharing platform. By design it has no surfaces where CSAE material could be distributed, discovered, or solicited. Specifically:

  • No public discovery. There are no public profiles, no search, no friend requests, no follow graph, no recommended-users feature, and no way to find another Parallax user you don't already know.
  • No stranger contact. Pairing is one-to-one and initiated only by a private, single-use invite link that one partner sends to the other via their own out-of-band channel (SMS, email). There is no in-app messaging, no chat with anyone other than your single paired partner, and no group functionality.
  • No image, video, or file upload. The app accepts only short-form structured answers (numeric ratings on a 1–10 scale, multiple-choice, brief text responses to a fixed library question). There is no media upload of any kind. The app cannot be used to transmit photos or video.
  • End-to-end encryption. Every user-authored field is encrypted on the user's device with a key that lives only on the paired devices. Belvantis cannot read user content under any circumstances — but the content surface is restricted in shape (above) such that CSAE material cannot be expressed within it.

3. Our standards

We commit to the following standards:

  • Zero tolerance. Any account credibly suspected of attempting to use Parallax to facilitate, depict, solicit, or distribute child sexual abuse material (CSAM) or to exploit a minor will be terminated immediately and permanently, the paired partner will be notified, and we will preserve and report the matter to the U.S. National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) via the CyberTipline at report.cybertip.org as required by 18 U.S.C. § 2258A.
  • Cooperation with law enforcement. We respond to valid legal process from law enforcement authorities in the jurisdictions where we operate, and we preserve account metadata under preservation requests issued under 18 U.S.C. § 2703(f) for the period required by law.
  • Account-level signals only. Because user content is end-to-end encrypted and Belvantis cannot read it, our enforcement is necessarily limited to account-level signals — for example, a partner's report, a pattern of pairing-invite abuse, or a signal from the identity provider (Apple or Google) flagging an account. We do not scan, decrypt, or process the content of user answers, predictions, or notes for any purpose, including CSAE detection.
  • Annual review. These standards are reviewed at least once per year and updated as the law, the product surface, or threat landscape changes. The last review date is at the top of this page.

4. How to report a concern

If you believe a Parallax account is being used to harm a child, or that the app is being used in any way that violates these standards, please contact us:

  • In-app: Open Settings → scroll to the About card → tap "report a safety concern". This opens your mail app prefilled to the address below, with your app version attached so we can identify the build.
  • Email: info@belvantis.com — monitored on business days; urgent matters are escalated to the child safety officer (below) within 24 hours.
  • For an immediate threat to a child, contact your local emergency services first. In the United States, that is 911 for an emergency or 1-800-843-5678 (1-800-THE-LOST) for the NCMEC CyberTipline. Reports to NCMEC can also be filed online at report.cybertip.org.

5. Child safety officer

Belvantis designates the following point of contact for child safety matters related to Parallax:

Benyamin Famili — Founder & Child Safety Officer, Belvantis
Email: info@belvantis.com
General contact: info@belvantis.com

6. Compliance with applicable laws

Belvantis complies with applicable laws related to combating child sexual abuse and exploitation, including:

  • The U.S. PROTECT Act (18 U.S.C. § 2251 et seq.) and 18 U.S.C. § 2258A reporting obligations to NCMEC.
  • The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA, 15 U.S.C. § 6501 et seq.), to the extent it applies — though Parallax does not knowingly collect data from anyone under 13.
  • The EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the UK Data Protection Act 2018, including the special protections afforded to minors' personal data.
  • The Australian eSafety Commissioner's Basic Online Safety Expectations and the UK Online Safety Act 2023, in the jurisdictions where Parallax is distributed.

7. Transparency

Because Parallax does not have surfaces where CSAM could be uploaded or distributed (no media upload, no public discovery, no stranger chat), we have not, as of the effective date of this document, made any reports to NCMEC or received any law-enforcement preservation requests related to CSAE. If our product surface changes in a way that creates such risk, this page and our reporting practices will be updated accordingly.
